Community Farm Community Supported Agriculture is where a direct relationship is created between a farmer and farm members who pay a weekly amount which guarantees the farmer a wage and the members a supply of produce. It`s a 28-acre farm, just two kilometres outside Cloughjordan, with a further 12 acres on the ecovillage site, which at full capacity can cater for up to 80 families. In 2009, the farm produced a wide range of vegetables -potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, beetroot, kale, chard, turnips, parsnips, tomatoes and courgettes. Our first Kerry calf was born in March of that year, so we have had a good supply of milk, and two other Kerry cows will produce offspring this Autumn. We have six Shetland sheep who each had a lamb last year and we have one Saddle-back pig, Peggy-sue, who had eight piglets so there is a supply of meat occasionally. We have a small clutch of hens providing us with eggs, and we plan to increase their numbers with the construction of the new pen. A variety of grain was grown -oats,barley and wheat as well as more unusual types such as rye and spelt -some of this will be animal feed and some for the members. The farm is not only organic (no artificial fertilisers or pesticides) but is also Bio-dynamic -a method which aims to improve the health and fertility of the land through preparations similar to homeopathy. CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community's farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. CSA farms are funded by subscriptions where members receive a weekly basket of vegetables, fruit, eggs or any type of farm produce.
